Beginings Revisted by Jim France

again! This week’s album is “Beginnings Revisited” by Jim France

There’s a simplicity to Jim France’s songs. They are well written, nicely paced and considered.

They tell stories. Jim’s lyrics are unfussy, they get to the point. The lead vocals are almost singy songy spoken word but are often picked up and lifted  by tasteful backing by gorgeous backing vocals. There’s a very intimate and friendly yet mournful delivery to these songs dealing with loss, friendship, death and pain. You feel in safe hands, it’s not mournful.

The guitars are clean  and tastefully played, almost stated understated. The use of delay and tremolo effect is erm, well effective. The mixes are unfussy and well balanced. The drums and bass allowing everything to just move along nicely.Jim can be found at @jimfrancemusic.bsky.social

My favorite tracks is ‘Gone (Revisited) with its sharp, crunchy, but restrained guitar work and very poetic lyrics.

Jim France’s “Beginnings Revisited” is an album about love and loss, a piece that feels very personal and relateable. The general style falls somewhere in the Americana genre, Jim’s soft, gentle vocals, accompanied with guitar and programmed percussion. Productionwise, everything sounds crisp and clear. What stood out most for me was the lyrical content.

The album is bookended with two happier songs, while the three songs in between are about loss of some kind. “Gone” seems to me like it is about a childhood memory about a person, “Hush” about the loss of a loved one and “Until The Very End” about the artists own reflections on the finality of life. This order feels purposeful and deliberate, as if Jim wanted to draw the audience in, talk about heavy subject matters and leave them with an uplifting feeling in the end; a rather effective way of storytelling.

Overall, I enjoyed this. For an audience that wants to go on an emotional journey, I can absolutely recommend giving this a chance.

This five-piece album is filled with gentle yet deeply melancholic songs about life and its most emotional moments. It’s sure to bring a tear to your eye, I promise. The instrumentals perfectly complement the themes, and the lyrics beautifully convey the intended story everytime. A project I highly recommend!
